Gennady “GGG” Golovkin 36-0 (33KO’s) has been avoided by the top middleweights ever since he started capturing belts and fans hearts alike. Golovkin has been knocking out everyone who has come across his path since making his HBO debut. He has officially knocked out 23 fighters consecutively, and is on his way to possibly breaking Bernard Hopkins 20 title defense record. Golovkin has amassed a reputation for brutal strength and power, which have made many of the top opponents hesitant to get in the ring with him. Today we look into such instances that have made Gennady Golovkin the “Boogey Man” of his division.
In his run as champion there has been a lot of push from the fans to have Saul Canelo Alvarez 48-1-1 (34KO’s) face off with Gennady Golovkin. Especially when Canelo was the WBC champion, the media was doing everything they could to get them to start answering questions about the fight taking place. Canelo had won the WBC belt from Miguel Cotto, and after knocking out Amir Khan he was mandated to fight Golovkin or vacate the belt. Canelo and his team at Golden Boy Promotions opted to vacate and avoid the fight with Golovkin. This move turned out to be hurtful for Canelo and has had fans wondering if that fight would ever take place.
In the meantime, Golovkin went on to face Kell Brook in a sold out arena in London. Kell Brook’s corner stopped the fight in the 5th round, as it was later revealed that Golovkin broke Kell Brook’s orbital bone. Now Golovkin wants to unify all the belts in the division and become the undisputed middleweight champion of the world. Standing in his way is WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders 23-0 (12KO’s). The only title Golovkin needs to unify the division is strapped around Billy Joe’s waist. Saunders has done a lot of talking, but he has been all bark and no bite. Saunders had several opportunities to make the fight happen and never showed any true interest. So that leaves the fight with Saunders in doubt. Which means Golovkin has only 1 other top middleweight left to fight. A mandatory fight vs Daniel Jacobs 32-1 (29KO’s). This fight is very intriguing and from what I’m seeing they’re in negotiations. If this fight takes place then we might finally see the end of top middleweights avoiding Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. If these fights can’t be made in the near future Golovkin might be avoided the rest of his career and possibly be remembered as “The Boogey Man”. The video below showcases how he grew such a fearsome reputation. Enjoy
